Petite Folk Art Cross with Eye by Betsy Youngquist
This collaborative piece between Betsy and an unknown folk artist merges the central eye with radiating quartz crystal and a vintage matchstick cross. The eye is surrounded by glass beads, glass stones, druzy, Brazilian quartz crystal, Swarovski crystals, and Czech rhinestones. The underlying form was constructed using match sticks adhered to a piece of wood. The cross is an example of the Prison Folk Art tradition. Used matchsticks were a cheap, versatile, and readily available material for prisoners to use in the creative process. Later this art form was used as an art project in church camps with children. There is a hole on the back for wall hanging.
